When
we were first asked to play BugJam at Santa Pod, I was under the
impression it was in California. Before I had a chance to pack my
sunglasses and Beach Boys tunes, I
was told Santa Pod was in fact in Northampshire. After the initial disappointment to find we
would be traveling on the M1 instead of Route 66, I still packed my
Beach Boys tunes and set off up North. When we finally got to
the Wellingborough we found there was a 3 hour tailback into the site (how
did everyone know we were playing?). After a bit of nifty driving
down the wrong side of the road, we found we had overtaken 6,000 VWs and
were at the front of the queue.
Making ourselves at home in the
VIP area with all the VIP's (well, I spotted Ardal O'Hannon!), the
drinking started and before long the resident Earwax alcoholics were
rolling about on their backs after an early binge of inebriating
substances. With out tents finally set up it was time to party and
we spent the remainder of the night going crazy to house classics in
the Darkside arena.
Saturday
night was the night of the Club Earwax tent – a several thousand
capacity big top next to the main stage that in previous years has been
hosted by Carwash and Ministry of Sound. Nu-metal kids ‘Stoopy’ opened
the event with a selection of unimpressive skater boy rock and were
followed
by a chaotic set from the mighty Abdoujaparov!
Then the Suburban DJ's was unleashed as the tent started to fill to
capacity and despite a couple of technical hitches (we only had one deck
working for the last half hour) the crowd didn't seem to care and a
great time was had by the great unwashed VW drivers! Thanks once again to
Big Ed who kept the crowd going crazy with his on-stage antics and of
course all the Earwax crew who wandered around the tent drunkenly in their
Earwax t-shirts.
