God it was hot! One of the
hottest days of the year and Wax Music faves Rhesus are headlining the
Metro. Sweaty basement gigs are top fun; you can’t beat sweat dripping
from the walls to create an atmosphere. I first saw Rhesus just before
Christmas last year and although it was evident they had potential they
didn’t blow me away. But now Rhesus are a band transformed (Hey even the
bassist has changed sex, but not in a Big Brother type way) Jim looks
every bit the Rock Star especially with his Rock Star Guitar and Wayne
looks like he has escaped from The Ramones (A Good Thing).
Rhesus do remind me a lot of early Manics (Also a Good
Thing). This was a shambolic but totally enjoyable set. After breaking
strings on the opening track, they played Wax Music fave Juvenile
this punk pop anthem set the tone for the rest of this gig. Performance
is a tune although it does sound uncannily like Placebo (Rhesus claim
it was stolen from them first) Art Is Dead is already on its way to
becoming a new classic. The song is so punk rock even the drum kit
combusted during it, leaving Arran to bang away on one tom tom. (Now that
is cool). After hastily rebuilding the drum kit, it didn’t stay up for
long with Jim diving into the kit during the last song, the gig ended with
Jim under a drum kit in a hail of feedback. It was a top night from a top
band, here at Wax Music we are expecting great things from Rhesus.
