1994
as I’ve probably ranted somewhere before was a great year for music, Parklife,
Dog Man Star, Definitely Maybe and His and Hers.
Was it really a whole decade ago?
Well I’ve got a feeling that 2004 could possibly be as good!
I’m actually finding myself excited by new bands for the first
time in ages. Franz
Ferdinand have already released one of the anthems of the year in Take
Me Out a song which makes we want to dance and play guitar at the same
time. My Red Cell are
a fine mix of punk, noise and melody.
Keane have me reaching for the lighters with a sound so epic
I’m expecting Charlton Heston to star in it.
Razorlight are another new band who make we want to put my
Gazelles on and hit the Indie Dance floor.
Then we have tonight’s stars The Ordinary Boys.
This is a band you would get if you crossed the power pop sound
of The Jam with a healthy mix of The Smiths/The Kinks and Modern Life Is
Rubbish era Blur. This is
obviously a fantastic idea. With
intelligent lyrics, debut single ‘Maybe Someday’ deals with
communication breakdown along side an ass kicking tune.
If I had to invent my idea of a perfect band they would probably
sound a lot like The Ordinary Boys.
The Worthing based band have already gained a reputation as a
mouthy opinionated group but tonight’s show was a simple 40 minute heads
down and play the songs gig. To be honest that’s all the talking they need to do, it’s
refreshing to see a new band cite their influences as ‘everything from Dizzee
Rascal to Will Self and Graham Green’. On first listen
all the songs made me want to dance in an indie club style.
I think we will be hearing a lot more of The Ordinary Boys in 2004,
for once I feel the hype is justified.
