Not only are we a great source of new
music on the interweb but we also thought it was time to bring some of the
discoveries we made to the Kids. So
the first Wax Music night in North London took place in Kentish Town.
I’m a big fan of the Bull & Gate and had some top nights
there so it seemed a natural choice for venue.
With Apart From The Soul pulling out at the last minute it was left
to Danny Stevens to open up proceedings.
 Can’t
say enough good things about Danny, well crafted songs is such a horrible
way to put it but they are. Vocally
he sounds great, a distinctive voice like a kind of British Ryan Adams.
Danny though doesn’t seem to have much luck with the ladies and why
this may be bad for him its great for us - kind of holidaying in other
people’s misery. Better Without You is dedicated to an
ex-girlfriend. Fade Out
(Like A Dance) is also a really strong song and the mouth organ solo
sends a chill down my spine. Solo
singer songwriters can be such a bad idea but Danny Stevens is much better
than most and One In Ten is possibly the greatest love song I’ve
heard this year.
Cinimo are fast becoming my new favourite band.
Any band consisting of not one but two Dom Cookson’s are
obviously onto a winner. Cinimo
are a hard band to describe, they might look like an average skinny indie
band but their songs have so much more depth than that.
A lot of their power lies in the uniqueness of frontman Dom
Cookson’s voice - a bit Bowie’ish in places but still unlike anything
you’ve heard before. Don’t
Know as well as being a haunting piece of music had the best whistle
solo since Bobby Mcferin. Dancing doesn’t make you want to dance but to nod your
head in approval, yes they do have some shoe gazing moments but
importantly they are never dull ones.
They
also cover The Pet Shop Boys Heart and like all the best cover
versions they make it totally their own and it evens starts some of the
crowd dancing. Finally the crowd are treated to an epic guitar solo that
features on new tune ‘The Theft’ which is instantly crowned a future
classic by the Wax music crew. Cinimo deserve to playing bigger stages
than this and it should only be a matter of time till they do.
Final
band of the night are My Evil Twin. The Twin rawk but not in a rubbish
1987 spandex Darkness loving way, no instead in an Alt Rock stylee.
Their songs manage to be both emotive yet powerful and they have
the best guitar poses and moves since Busted. After losing their fourth
member to further education several years ago, the Twin are now standing
on their own six feet and sounding better than ever, with
lead vocalist Steve Ithell perfecting screaming into a fine art
form. The Twins assorted friends and fans are treated to old favourites
such as Break For the Bends and Cannibal Song whilst several
new tracks show that the band are sticking to their rawk roots and are
certainly not tempted to unleash the inevitable "eastern influenced"
material quite yet. Even the suited Cinimo fans are strangely impressed
and the evening finishes with the wall of sound that is My New Best
Friend which is a fittingly impressive ending to a great set.
In
the end it was a quality night of music from 3 acts, which whilst being
completely different in sound, worked really well together. Everyone
seemedto have a
top night all for a bargain £4, what more can you ask for?
