D-Town
Frontin'(DJ Sneak rmx)
Filthy Hot Jizz Records
Feb 2004

House

Played also on the 'Wax Music' Show on the 21st Feb, this superb remix by the 'Sneak' created a stir when played last Sunday & does on the floor too. Pharrel Williams' high toned lyrics mix well with the 4/4 beats & this is a great example of how to remix an R&B record. For those trying to get hold of it. I recommend Black Market records in D'arblay St London, W1. This is crackin'!!

Aya
Uptown
Naked Music (12")
Feb 2004

Deep House

Jay Denes returns in usual style with this loungy, downbeat number featuring the talents of Aya (who I believe sung Sweeter Love). This is a nice track by all means & the remixes are pretty good too by Trentemoller(on the up), but it's no Music & Wine,  I played this on the 21st feb on the WAX Music show. This has some nice touches & will not disappoint diehard Blue 6/Naked Music fans. the cover itself is worth yer £8 alone!!

HIFI Mike
Stereo Flavas
Purple Music

House

Now this is a very hard to get track(granted) but well worth the efforts. Believe me I know!!

This is a 'near' classic house record with the original not much more than 'mediocre'. Jamie Lewis puts out a great remix, fusing the lyrics with a great Garage-y type house sound. One for the boxes. A real 'positive' record!

Jackson
Utopia EP
Barclay
Feb 2004

Leftfield/Abstract/Nu-Electro

Back to 'Leftfield' housey/electro/funk( I hate having to pigeon-hole music).

I bought this for one track 'Radio Caca'..Astoundingly produced electronic funk! Broken beats & surging bassslines. going all over the place. Maybe not dancefloor friendly but ...Ooh... it oozes class!!

Telefon Tel Aviv

Leftfield/Abstract/Ambient

I believe this is my first 'downtempo' review on WAX & judging by the quality that is out there at present, will not be the last!

After their exemplary debut in 2002 with 'Fahrenheit Fair Enough' on Hefty Records Telefon Tel Aviv follow that up with yet another 'nearly' classic album.
Layers of sounds, glitches & excellent production earn this recognition alone, although some may percieve this as little too glitchy in places, but this is for DEEP moments, especially the signature track 'Map Of What Is..' an orchestral sweep that will nearly have you in tears, beautiful!!

Vocals on the other tracks are also nothing short of brilliant!

My faves 'Nothing's worth losing that' , 'I lied', 'Map of what is...' & 'At the edge of the world...'

Hear this!

Faith Goes Running
Bootleg 12"
Jan 2004

House

There's a good possibility that you may have heard this already at your local bar/club.
Yes! There's far too many of these floating about at present but there's a few worth plucking, this is one of 'em!

Briefly: Alan Braxe meets Faith Evans with superb results, bound to get response wherever. Also includes a radio friendly edit on the flip (don't know why!)

Andy Caldwell feat;Latrice
Give A Little
Naked Music (12")
Jan 2004

House

Featuring also on the Defected label(on the rise again) Jay-J & Latrice now have their talents heard by the Naked collective. A real stormer of a track, irresistably catchy bassline & nice vocal talents by Latrice this track is a 'puller' by all means. One of their best, which in my opinion is a usual occurence with this lot. Also check 'Nevermore' by Owusu & Green.

Atlantis
Future Love
Giant Step Records

Ron Trent & Naomi Nsombi made a great combination & contribution to the Deep / Progressive house music scene with the classic ‘No More Excuses’.

Ron Trent’s superlative production & drum programming with whispered vocals from Naomi Nsombi featured on that as well as this, another superb feat….These guys just have T.A.L.E.N.T!! The flip has a more broken beat yet still keeping the vibe mix by none other than Chris Brann under his ‘Ananda Project’ guise….All Deep House lovers will LOVE this record.

UnaBombers
E.P.
Electric Soul Records

More re-edit magic with a disco classic from Teena Marie ‘Beyond The Groove’ given the UnaBombers treatment. My first record from them & I have to say that it is Funky as $£!!

The flip has 2 more great tracks in the  re-edit styli..A track called ‘Shake ‘em up’ (sounding like George Clinton or early Kool & The Gang).

How many more disco golden nuggets are left out there..One can wonder..Or maybe you’re fed up with them, but not me. I’m lovin’ it!! Nice to see where House music REALLY got its roots from. Much in the tradition of the Ron Hardy sets of the 80’s. This track would move the most quietest of dancers out there!!!

Henrik Schwarz
Chicago
Mood Music 023

Any fans of Moodyman & Theo Parrish will surely like this moody deep house number from Henrik Schwarz. Also, any fans of MoodMusic will not be disappointed. The other side ‘Feel Da Vibe’  has more lush, nocturnal sounds & ‘Sunday’ is more downbeat hip-hop style to it. Not much going on in this mix though, I have to say…

1gnition

Night Flight/Planet 69
Manor Music

Okay, so we're gonna be a bit bias on this one as Ignition are being looked after by our friends at
Manor Music, but this sexy little 7" really is a perfectly formed piece of plastic heaven. To call
'Night Flight' funky house would be a lie as there is no pounding bass drum to guide the infectious

rhythm along. However, both 'Night Flight' and the flip 'Planet 69' contain all other elements of the
disco inspired stompers that have recently invaded the dancefloor but with so much more class
than the likes of Room 5. Think Alan Brakes'-esque production with a vocal as smooth as Ron
Carol's and you get an idea of how irresistible this tune is. And the fact that its limited to 500 means that its
certainly worth grabbing before it gets remixed and re-released on twelve.

USG

Ncameu
CLAIRAUDIENCE(1997)

Another ABSOLUTE DEEP HOUSE CLASSIC & essential for any DJ looking for House music with Soul. Production on this alone is exemplary with spine tingling lyrics by D'bora Rivers & synth work from Mr Nicholson & Ron Trent (who I believe done the Drum Programming).

I'm speechless about this record (well.. almost!). It's just the NUTS!!! All the mixes are excellent & the trumpet solo on the COCOINSTRA mix by Peven Everett is amazing... Peeps You must own this record!!

Paradise Soul

The Theme
Kinky Vinyl

A favourite of Steve Lawler & Pete Tong this House Stomper has done it's part in Ibiza (so I've read anyway!) & has made it's mark over here. Chances are you've probably heard this track & if you're a fan of the 'TYRANT' kinda house music, then you'll LOVE this!! Made by Mike Monday & Stretch Sylves(of Stretch 'n' Vern fame).

Anthemic chords & Tribal influences, it's a track that could stick in your head long after you've heard it, mark this one on your 'Must Buys' list.

 The Paradise

In Love With You
Vulture Records

This track simply is an Anthem!! Makes me realise why I got into music in the first place, beginning with a
10cc (I'm not in love) type vibe, building into a crescendo with the loveliest loop-line, well sung by Romuald
(I think, although I also heard it was a 10 city sample..oh well). Very simple ,very addictive, a great track
for the end of a set in my ears. From the man who brought you 'Running'...A Disco house classic With
definitions of Stardust all over it.. this will sell fast!!!

Akwaaba

Munkey (Ray Mang Mixes)
Discfunction

Anyone familiar with Ray Mang???.. good, cos' he's one to look for at the moment, after his great album
'MANGLED' on Eskimo records last year it could be hard to miss! His mixes are by far the best of the rather
mundane original. This has all the potential of being put out on a dance-floor & getting SERIOUS response,
with a superb synth & catchy basslines. This IS dance music!

DJ T

Philly
Get Physical Music

I first heard this epic track on the latest Naked Music CD 'Lost On Arrival' (reviewed later & OUT NOW) & this
was one that stood out for me! Upon hearing this track, you may think you can hear the Rapper's
Delight bassline & you'd probably be right too, this is a track that harks back to the original dance days of the
80's electro, with THAT Philly sound we all know & love. This was relatively hard to find but now is out on Naked
Music, as part 1of 2 in the Lost On Arrival Ltd release 12's. Get it while you can peepz!! The remixes on the flip
(of the original) are good too!!

Trentemoller
Trentemoller E.P.
Naked Music Records

Here I go again, another Naked release review, it's ok I'm not biased
(much!!) This is the Dutchman's first EVER
release & if this is the standard
to expect then BRING IT ON!!! Fans of Morgan Geist & his Metro Area series will
like this doozy!! Nice & deep electro/disco/dubby house. Titled simply 'In Progress', it is literally that & This will
feature vocals at a later date this year so watch out. The flip 'Le Champagne' is an Ace too with a much more
upbeat tempo & sounding like Cleptomaniacs in a way to describe it...watch out for Anders Trentemoller with
upcoming mixes for Andy Caldwell, another
exceptional artist to the Naked repertoire!!

Various Artists
Lost On Arrival
Astralwerks/Naked

Naked Music return with a new palette for your ears. A definite left turn for the label & nobody's complaining
as they explore the dubbier/electro side of house & funk. This is an exceptional album, with new artists on
their agenda (e.g.Trentemoller,Ray Mang, DJ T, J&S Productions, Unai etc) all providing some 'posterior pounding'
tracks of Club Quality. Superbly mixed by their resident mixer & sequencer in many of their releases,J Mark Andrus
& the first in (i'm hoping will be)a series of collections. For example: 'Carte Blanche', 'Bare Essentials' etc.

Highlights for me are:DJ-T-Philly,Trentemoller(both tracks) Ray Mang-Aphreako & Manzel's Space Funk(with
production by Kenny Dope). As with all other Naked releases, this is well packaged & nicely sequenced in pace.
To be played at High Volume!!

Elton John
Are You Ready For Love (Ltd pink 12")
Southern Fried Records

I think it's safe to say that you've all probably heard this tune about a thousand times on the annoying Sky
Sports ads right?? Well...This IS a tune, lyrics may sound too cheesy to some ears, but you can't ignore it's
ability to lift yer spirits, especially when you have Thom Bell in production too (ofDetroit Spinners fame). Check
out the guitar solos & bass lines towards the end of the track. A reason alone to buy this. Not forgetting of
course about Ashley Beedle's remix on the flip, cutting out the verses & focusing on the production & remaining
extremely faithful to the original. Not sure how many were made but get it while you can!!

Erro feat:Osunlade
Don't Change
Yoruba Records

Amongst the MANY records in my collection, I don't think I'll be able to comment on all of them, but in the case
of the Classics I have to and this is Certainly one of them. Heard on Gilles Peterson's Worldwide show in 2002,
I was blown away by Osunlade's production of this catchy number. There's just no ignoring the beat on this
track, Erro(Eric Robertson) performs the vocals with spine tingling beauty. This has become a deep house classic
& rightfully so. Great lyrics, great vocals by Erro himself. My second by Osunlade  & not my last!!
